ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Built by someone who's been in the fire.

EV Javelin wasn't designed in a boardroom. It was born from firsthand experience — from standing next to burning lithium-ion batteries and knowing the tools in hand weren't built for this fight.

Ellery Burton is a professional engineer, active firefighter, and the inventor behind EV Javelin. His work sits at the intersection of field experience and rigorous engineering — and that combination is what makes this product different from everything else on the market.

BACKGROUND

From the military to the fire ground to the patent office.

Military Service

Ellery's career began in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he developed a deep understanding of high-stakes operational environments — the kind where equipment failures aren't inconveniences, they're life-threatening.

His military service instilled a philosophy that defines everything about EV Javelin: build it simple, build it rugged, build it so it works the first time — every time. No complexity for complexity's sake. No fragile systems that fail under pressure.

Engineering & Education

Ellery holds a PhD in Engineering, bringing deep technical rigor to every aspect of product development — from materials science and electrical isolation to the fluid dynamics of suppressant injection.

His academic work isn't theoretical. It's applied. Every design decision in the Javelin traces back to peer-reviewed engineering principles and real-world field validation. This is the kind of foundation that patent examiners, acquirers, and fire chiefs trust.

Ellery Burton on the fire ground

A firefighter who saw the gap firsthand.

As an active firefighter, Ellery has responded to EV incidents and watched his department struggle with the same problem every fire service faces: you cannot fight a fire you cannot reach.

He's stood on the highway watching a tanker dump thousands of gallons of water onto a sealed battery pack — knowing it wasn't reaching the source. He's seen the hesitation in crews asked to pierce a high-voltage system with no way to know if it's live.

EV Javelin exists because he stopped accepting "let it burn" as a standard operating procedure and started engineering a real solution.

EV Javelin prototype engineering

A proven track record of bringing products from concept to reality.

EV Javelin isn't Ellery's first invention. He has a demonstrated history of identifying operational gaps, engineering purpose-built solutions, and navigating the full product lifecycle — from concept through prototype, testing, IP protection, and market readiness.

His approach is the same every time: start with the operator's problem, engineer the simplest possible solution, protect the IP, and validate it in the field. No slide decks. No vaporware. Physical prototypes, real testing, defensible patents.

The EV Javelin prototype is fully engineered in stainless steel, dry-run field-tested with municipal fire departments, and protected under PCT patent filing PCT/IB2024/058297.

Alterra Innovation

Alterra Innovation is the engineering firm behind EV Javelin, founded by Ellery Burton in Steinbach, Manitoba. The company is focused on solving high-impact safety problems with defensible, patent-protected technology.

Alterra's thesis is simple: the best safety products are designed by people who've actually faced the hazard. Every product in the pipeline starts with a real operational problem, observed firsthand, and ends with a physical prototype that's been tested in the conditions it was built for.
